You may have heard that Ted Cruz did not endorse Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, noting in the process that Trump had insinuated Cruz’s wife is ugly and that his father, Rafael, may have helped Lee Harvey Oswald kill John F. Kennedy. Well, guys, Trump has a response to all that. From Politico:
“I don’t know his father. I met him once. I think he’s a lovely guy,” Trump said at a morning-after rally in Cleveland. “All I did is point out the fact that on the cover of the National Enquirer there was a picture of him and crazy Lee Harvey Oswald having breakfast.”
(“This was a magazine that, in many respects, should be well respected,” Trump added, citing the O.J. Simpson case and John Edwards’ extramarital affair as stories that the publication had done accurate reporting on.)
In his remarks Friday Trump appears to be specifically referring to an April Enquirer story, which suggested (with little plausibility) that Rafael Cruz is shown in a video of Oswald passing out leaflets in New Orleans in August 1963. The Enquirer ran this hot leaflet scoop with the headline “Ted Cruz Father Now Linked to JFK Assassination!” Here’s what Trump said at the time:
His father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald’s being—you know, shot. I mean, the whole thing is ridiculous. What is this, right prior to his being shot, and nobody even brings it up. They don’t even talk about that. That was reported, and nobody talks about it. I mean, what was he doing—what was he doing with Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before the death, before the shooting?
It’s not clear where Trump got the thing about breakfast. Donald Trump can’t even accurately quote the National Enquirer.
