There was speculation that the Republican National Convention, which kicked off on Monday in Cleveland, would feature some quite exciting and unusual speakers such as Don King, Tom Brady, Mike Ditka, and convicted rapist Mike Tyson. While none of these figures ultimately panned out, Day 1 of the RNC will include some very weird cats, celebrity and otherwise, lending their voices to Donald Trump’s cause of Making America Great Again.
Here are the most odd, “who the heck are they” and/or “what the heck are they doing there” speakers on the schedule for Day 1:
- Stacey Dash, e.g., “Dee” from Clueless. Her official RNC bio says Dash “started Dash America with the aim of making it easier to be a conservative in Hollywood.” Well, there goes her social life.
- Willie Robertson, e.g., one of the Duck Dynasty guys. Willie was an early endorser of and campaigner for Trump, despite his father Phil’s endorsement of Ted Cruz. Willie is the one who is less prone to saying Trump-like things, sadly.
- Scott Baio, who according to his RNC bio, “is known for portraying memorable characters on several hit television shows, including Happy Days, Joanie Loves Chachi, and Charles In Charge.” Why is he speaking on behalf of Trump? Well he has strong opinions! Last month, Baio told Fox Business “I can’t tell … if [Obama is] dumb, he’s a Muslim or he’s a Muslim sympathizer and I don’t think he’s dumb.” Also, some of Trump’s other celebrity invites fell through, which means maybe he had to settle a bit for some lower tier star voltage.
- Which brings us to Antonio Sabato Jr., former Calvin Klein model and star of such soaps as General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful. Of his reasons for supporting Trump, Sabato Jr. once said: “We need a wall. Do you have a wall at your house? I do, and I personally wouldn’t want it open for everybody to come in.” Also: “I came here legally here to the United States from Italy, and I’m legal.”
This should be fun. Yeah, it’s going to be fun.
