Today’s biggest stories:
- Five police officers were killed in Dallas when an Army veteran named Micah Xavier Johnson who was apparently angry at “white people” opened fire during what had been an admirably peaceful and cooperative protest against police violence. (The Dallas police department is known for being progressive on civil rights issues.)
- Here’s information about the victims of the attack.
- A black man who attended the Dallas protest while (legally) carrying a rifle was mistakenly identified as a suspect by the Dallas PD but quickly exonerated when photos and videos proving his innocence were circulated on Twitter.
- While Matt Drudge and Tea Party yahoo Joe Walsh reacted to Thursday night’s events by enthusiastically announcing a race war, a number of other prominent conservatives have responded with thoughts that are surprisingly respectful towards the overall goals of the Black Lives Matter movement.
- A random Friday shooting in Bristol, Tennessee also appears to have been justified by its perpetrator as a response to police brutality. (The woman killed in the shooting was not a police officer.)
- After issuing an unusually subdued statement in response to the attack, Donald Trump eventually cut loose and started using it as an excuse to complain about Hillary.
- In general, this week saw conservative pundits expressing equal amounts of horror about both Clinton and Trump.
- And an incredibly accomplished Pakistani activist and humanitarian named Abdul Sattar Edhi died at age 88.
