Hillary Clinton sat down with the FBI Saturday for around three-and-a-half hours as part of the investigation into her use of a private email server while she was secretary of State. The Daily Caller had the scoop that the meeting would be happening, and her campaign acknowledged it after it took place on Saturday morning at the FBI headquarters in Washington. “Secretary Clinton gave a voluntary interview this morning about her email arrangements while she was secretary,” Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill said in a statement. “She is pleased to have had the opportunity to assist the Department of Justice in bringing this review to a conclusion. Out of respect for the investigative process, she will not comment further on her interview.”
The interview is a sign that the FBI investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server is nearing the finish line. Once the probe ends, the FBI will give a recommendation to Attorney General Loretta Lynch about whether to move forward with a prosecution of Clinton or her aides. On Friday, Lynch said she “fully expect[s]” to accept the FBI’s recommendations on the case.
The interview comes after investigators have already talked to several close aides to Clinton as part of the probe into whether there was a mishandling of classified information. Clinton has repeatedly expressed regret about using a private email server, saying she would take it back if she could. “It was allowed, and the rules have been clarified since I left about the practice,” Clinton said recently. “I have said many times it was a mistake and if I could go back I would do it differently.”
