Paul Ryan Really Stepped in It Today

Donald Trump may have tried to tamp down Republican angst Tuesday night by reading a fairly conventional speech off of a teleprompter, but the main news story on the Republican side Wednesday morning will still be that he’s a racist and all of these other fuddy-duddies on Capitol Hill are just rolling along with it

House Speaker Paul Ryan’s description of Trump’s crusade against Judge Gonzalo Curiel as “the textbook definition of a racist comment,” and subsequent declaration that he still supports Trump because Hillary Clinton is worse, is so far the most vivid demonstration of Republican acquiescence to their new master. And this is the sort of tabloid cover that can define how a year like this is remembered.
