The Jackson, Mississippi, Clarion-Ledger has Wednesday’s most America-like story:

A child suffered a superficial wound at Merit Health Central hospital when a gun in her mother’s purse accidentally discharged, Jackson Police Department confirmed.

Authorities said the shooting happened in the Emergency Room when a gun went off in the child’s mother’s purse. The child is said to be a 2-year-old girl.

The gun apparently went off when the woman dropped her purse; a bullet ricocheted off a vending machine (extra America points!) and grazed the right side of the child’s face.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, 141 children 11 or younger have been killed or injured by guns in the United States in 2016.
