Elizabeth Warren has kept fairly quiet during this election season even as Bernie Sanders’ success has demonstrated that Warren—who’s similarly known for speaking forcefully about corporate misbehavior and wealth inequality but also boasts the key electoral advantage of not being a self-declared socialist—might have been a very formidable candidate herself. Warren, in fact, is the only female senator who has not endorsed a presidential candidate. (The others have endorsed Hillary Clinton.) Today, however, Warren jumped in to the national discussion for a brisk ethering of the Republican frontrunner:
Many attacks on Trump have been so lame as to make him more popular; by responding outlandishly to other candidates’ generic clichés about how “divisive” he is, Trump underlines his claim to be a renegade who will tell the truth even when it’s not polite to do so. Warren’s approach here is to come directly at Trump while speaking his own language. And given that she is a buzzed-about potential vice presidential candidate in an era when VP choices have tended to play the role of the loose cannon who’s more colorful and rhetorically extreme than his/her running mate, this may be a preview of the kind of attack we’ll be seeing more of this fall.
