As you can see above, Norwegian mass killer Anders Breivik gave a Nazi salute today as he arrived at a hearing that will consider his complaint that being held in solitary confinement in his infamously well-appointed three-room prison suite constitutes “inhuman or degrading treatment.” CNN reports that “Judge Helen Andenaes Sekulic instructed Breivik not to repeat the gesture when he returns to court to testify on Wednesday.”

Breivik, a racist right-wing fanatic, killed 77 people in and near Oslo on July 22, 2011.

The New York Times notes that Breivik’s suite is 340 square feet and includes “a treadmill, a fridge, a DVD player, a Sony PlayStation and a desk with a typewriter” as well as a television, a radio, and newspapers. Breivik has also been allowed to take correspondence courses at Oslo University. His complaint alleges that authorities are violating the European Convention on Human Rights by refusing to allow him contact with other prisoners, heavily censoring his mail, and limiting his phone conversations. The government argues that the restrictions are reasonable because Breivik, who has never expressed remorse or apologized for his crimes, could use interactions with others to encourage and inspire further acts of extremist terrorism.
