Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz spent most of Thursday evening’s Republican primary debate tag-teaming Donald Trump, trying to maybe, finally, lay a few serious blows on the billionaire insult comic and halt his march toward their party’s presidential nomination. They went after him for bilking students at Trump University. They reminded viewers that Trump had cut checks to Hillary Clinton in the past. They pointed out that his clothing is made in Mexico and that he brings in foreign workers to staff his clubs instead of hiring American workers. They accused him of not having answers on foreign policy. They (well, Cruz) said he had a “tenuous relationship with the truth.”
But would they still support him for president if he wins the Republican nomination? What say you, Sen. Rubio?
Rubio: I will support the Republican nominee. Because the Democrats have two people left in the race. One of them is a socialist. America doesn’t want to be a socialist country. If you want to be, then move to a socialist country. The other one is under FBI investigation. And not only under FBI investigation, she lied to the families of the victims Benghazi and anyone who lies to family victims will never be the commander in chief.
And you, Sen, Cruz?
Cruz: Yes. Because I gave my word that I would. And I do what I said I would do. Tuesday we saw an overwhelming victory in the state of Texas. I won Texas by 17 percent. I will say it was a powerful affirmation that the people who know me best and that I campaigned to made promises if you elect me, I’ll lead the fight against amnesty and will fight for the Bill of Rights every day. That the people of Texas said you have kept your word.
And, just for good measure, what about you Gov. John Kasich? We know you tried to stay above the fray and all, but …
Kasich: Yes. And I think before it’s said and done, I’ll be the nominee …
All right, got it. On the bright side, you all still have a little more dignity than Chris Christie. For now.
