MIAMI, FL - DECEMBER 18: In this photo illustration, a Rock River Arms AR-15 rifle is seen with ammunition on December 18, 2012 in Miami, Florida. The weapon is similar in style to the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle that was used during a massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. Firearm sales have surged recently as speculation of stricter gun laws and a re-instatement of the assault weapons ban following the mass shooting. (Photo illustration by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

If movies have taught us anything, it’s that for a police officer losing your car and losing your gun, no matter how hilarious the circumstance, are serious no-nos. So you can imagine how a certain Orange County deputy was feeling on Wednesday, when he discovered he had misplaced his AR-15 assault rifle. In the movie version of this story, the officer’s first thought was: The boys down at the precinct are going to have a field day with this. In real life, it probably went more like: “$#%@!#$*!”

The day started like another day for the officer, around 7:00 p.m. he was prepping his equipment for his upcoming shift and placed the rifle—juuuust for a second—on the back of his patrol car. You may have done this with coffee on top of your car. You get the idea. And you know what happens next. The officer drove off and the rifle, well, who knows? When it’s a cup of coffee you’ve just lost, you mentally retrace your steps, Google the warning signs for early onset Alzheimers, and then hit Starbucks again. This, however, is what happens when drive off without a semiautomatic assault rifle. It involves bloodhounds.
