Man Shoots Philadelphia Police Officer “in the Name of Islam” in Horrific, Unprovoked Ambush

A Philadelphia police officer is expected to recover after being ambushed by a man who fired 13 shots into the officer’s patrol car window “in the name of Islam,” a local CBS affiliate reports. The officer, Jesse Hartnett, was struck three times in the arm; he was able to return fire and is believed to have hit his 30-year-old assailant, who was captured nearby, at least three times.

Hartnett was taken to a hospital for surgery but is “awake” and “coherent,” Philadelphia police commissioner Richard Ross says. From CBS:

Sources tell Eyewitness News the suspect has given a full confession, saying he did it in the name of Islam.

“When you look at the video, this is one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen,” Commissioner Ross said. “This guy tried to execute the police officer. The police officer had no idea he was coming. It’s amazing he’s alive.”

Said Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, who just took office this week, “There are just too many guns on the streets and I think our national government needs to do something about that.”*
