The issue of Syrian refugees has been pushed out of the the U.S. national news consciousness by the San Bernardino shooting and Donald Trump’s response thereto, but it’s still an extremely pressing issue internationally. An estimated 4 million-plus Syrians have been displaced; despite public opposition, the U.S. is still planning to take in 10,000 such refugees, and to our north, Canada has promised to take 25,000.  Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau welcomed one group of arrivals last night at Toronto’s airport in highly photogenic fashion, as you can see above. The New York Times article about the photo op says there is “widespread public support” in Canada for the settling of refugees, though that assertion is belied by recent polls, one of which found that a majority of Canadians opposed Trudeau’s plan. (That poll was conducted Nov. 17; a more recent poll that used slightly different wording had more refugee-friendly results.)
