The death of a parent is understandably hard on anyone, no matter the circumstances. But losing both parents on the same day? That’s what former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie had to endure on Wednesday. Flutie’s parents, who had been married for 56 years, died an hour apart, the Heisman Trophy winner explained in a Facebook post Wednesday.

This morning my family experienced the tragic loss of my father, Dick and mother, Joan. My Dad had been ill and died of a heart attack in the hospital and my Mom, less than an hour later had a sudden heart attack and passed away. They say you can die of a broken heart and I believe it.
