U.S. Tennis Phenom’s Swing and Miss Puts Him in Contention for Official Whiff of the Year

American tennis player Frances Tiafoe has a lot going for him. This year, the 6’2 17-year-old turned pro, played in the French Open for the first time, signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports, and saw his ranking climb from quadruple digits to 226 in the world. That’s a big year for a teenager, even one that’s been anointed as the next big thing in American tennis. Someday, there’s a good chance Tiafoe will be playing for titles, but during a match with 31-year-old Tunisian Malek Jaziri on Tuesday, the American phenom-in-waiting put himself squarely in the running for another, less desirable award—miss of the year! While Tiafoe faces stiff competition, and is a late November entrant, let this be a reminder to everyone—keep your eye on the ball. Or don’t record yourself playing tennis.
