Update, Nov. 2, 2015: The Atlantic Coast Conference, which counts both Miami and Duke as members, announced on Sunday that officials made four (!) different mistakes during the loony kickoff return and its aftermath, two of which would have negated the touchdown and one of which would have ended the game immediately as a Duke win. The entire officiating crew (seven on-field officials and two off-field officials) has been suspended for two games.
Original post, Nov. 1, 2015: In one of the loonier plays in college football history, Miami beat Duke on Saturday with an eight-lateral kick return as time expired. On the previous play, Duke’s Thomas Sirk had seemingly sealed the game by putting his team up by three with six seconds left. Then the Hurricanes fielded the ball at the 25, and did this:
The victory, which was confirmed after several minutes of review, was especially sweet considering the team’s past week, in which it suffered the worst defeat in school history and the subsequent firing of head coach Al Golden. “It’s never over. It’s never over,” interim head coach Larry Scott said after the game. “I don’t know what to say.”
