Police in upstate New York are reportedly getting closer to capturing fugitive David Sweat, who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility on June 6 along with fellow inmate Richard Matt.
At a press conference today, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) revealed that Sweat’s DNA had been found within a mile of the location where Matt was shot dead in a standoff with border patrol agents on Friday. The senator would not go into detail but said the authorities had narrowed down the area in which Sweat could be hiding.
Last night, Franklin County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill said he believed Sweat could be apprehended in as little as 48 hours:
“Anyone in the woods and on the run from the law so to speak is not getting a full eight hours sleep, they’re not eating well and they have to keep moving,” Mulverhill said. “He’s fatigued, tired, and he’s going to make a mistake.”
Some 1,200 people are currently searching for Sweat, who was serving a life sentence for the 2002 killing of a sheriff’s deputy, over a 22 square-mile area around where Matt was killed. Investigators believe he may be armed.
