Rachel Dolezal has resigned the presidency of the Spokane NAACP, she announced in a Facebook post that alludes to (but doesn’t take a position on) the controversy over whether she is “black” or “white.”

The NAACP noted on Friday that “racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership” and said it “stands behind Ms. Dolezal’s advocacy record.” The organization’s statement referred vaguely to Dolezal’s claim to have received racially motivated hate mail—a claim that the Spokane Police Department has said it could not verify—but did not say whether the group believes her allegations to be legitimate.
