Update, 11:35 a.m.: New York police commissioner William Bratton, in a brief press conference, said the man who was shot had been approached by officers who recognized him as the suspect in Monday's hammer attacks. The suspect then attacked one of the officers, Bratton said, before her partner shot him. Bratton said the suspect is being treated at a hospital; NBC New York, which initially reported the man was dead, now says he is in "extremely critical condition."

Original post, 11:05 a.m.: Police in New York shot a man near the Penn Station and Port Authority transit hubs this morning, reports say. The suspect was reportedly attempting to hit a police officer with a hammer and is believed to be the same person suspected of three unprovoked hammer attacks on strangers in Manhattan on Monday. From NBC New York:

The suspect, an image of whom had been captured by surveillance cameras and released by police Tuesday, was killed at the scene near West 37th Street and Eighth Avenue around 10 a.m. Wednesday, sources said. Sources said he tried to attack a female officer and was shot.
