New York police officer Brian Moore has died, multiple outlets report, two days after being shot in the head when he and his partner approached a man who they believed might be in possession of a gun. Moore was 25. Moore’s alleged assailant, Demetrius Blackwell of Queens, is an ex-con who has been arrested and was charged with attempted murder before Moore’s death. From CNN:

Moore, 25, and another officer, Erik Jansen, 30, were sitting in an unmarked police vehicle when they saw a passerby adjusting something in his waistband.

Moore, who was driving, pulled up behind the man, later identified as Demetrius Blackwell, 35, to ask about it, Bratton said. Blackwell allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband and opened fire on both officers, who were in the car and had no chance to fire back.

Moore’s father and uncle are retired NYPD officers. The weapon Blackwell allegedly used to shoot Moore has not been recovered.
