One of the gunmen killed during Sunday night’s apparent attack on a “Muhammad Cartoon Contest” in Garland, Texas, has been identified as a Phoenix-area man named Elton Simpson who was convicted in 2011 of lying to the FBI during a terrorism investigation. FBI agents and bomb technicians are reportedly at Simpson’s Phoenix home, and his as-yet-unidentified roommate may have been the other Garland shooter:
Simpson’s 2011 conviction, for which he was sentenced to probation, reportedly involved lying to the FBI about a potential jihad-related trip to Somalia that he had “discussed.” He may have been the proprietor of a since-suspended Twitter account that reportedly used the hashtag #texasattack before the shooting began.
