A member of Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell’s security team left a handgun and ammunition clip stuffed in a toilet-seat-cover dispenser in a U.S. Capitol bathroom on Jan. 29, Roll Call reports—and that’s only the second-most disturbing incident involving a loose gun and a Republican leader this calendar year:
A 7- or 8-year-old child visiting the Capitol with his parents found the next loaded Glock lost by a dignitary protection officer, according to the source. A member of the security detail for John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, allegedly left the firearm in the bathroom of the Speaker’s Suite on March 24.
On April 16 a janitor at Capitol Police headquarters found yet another misplaced gun.
Said a Capitol Police spokeswoman in a statement: “The Department takes very seriously all breaches of Department rules and has established policies that address such matters.” That’s good! That’s good. The first step towards not leaving loaded guns in bathrooms for children to find them is establishing policies that address such matters.
