Update, 11:40 a.m.: Tunisian officials say at least 19 people were killed in Wednesday’s Tunis terror attack, 17 of them foreigners. Two gunmen have been reported killed as well, and a third may be at large.
Original post, 11:10 a.m.: Uniformed attackers armed with assault rifles and grenades have killed at least eight people and possibly many more at the Bardo Museum in Tunis, including one Tunisian and seven tourists; the New York Times says Tunisian state media reports that 10 hostages have been taken as well. CNN is reporting that two attackers have been killed.
The Bardo Museum is adjacent to Tunisia’s parliament building, where legislators were discussing terrorism legislation on Wednesday, the BBC says.
Tunisia was the site of an al-Qaida synagogue attack in 2002 that killed 19, and the country reportedly contributes more foreign fighters than any other nation to jihadist groups in Iraq and Syria.
