Two members of the University of Oklahoma’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity have been expelled for leading the chant of “there’ll never be a nigger SAE,” which was captured on a video that circulated this Sunday. Oklahoma’s SAE chapter has already been shut down by the fraternity’s national office, and OU President David Boren says the group will be permanently banned from campus.

A New York Times piece documents other SAE chapters’ involvement in incidents of racial hostility and notes that an article in the fraternity’s online magazine describes a campaign “to bring Sigma Alpha Epsilon closer to its antebellum roots.” The group was founded in 1856 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
