David Carr died of an aggressive form of lung cancer, according to an autopsy that was performed after his sudden death. Heart disease also contributed to his death, reports the New York Daily News. The New York Times media columnist collapsed at the newspaper’s newsroom shortly before 9 p.m. on Thursday. He was given CPR and taken to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Times. A spokeswoman for the paper refused to tell the Associated Press whether the company was aware of Carr’s illness. Carr was a survivor of Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Carr’s death and the hundreds of tributes it generated appear to have renewed interest in his memoir. Simon & Schuster is rushing out 10,000 more copies of The Night of the Gun, according to the New York Post. The memoir soared from the 53,570 spot on Amazon to No. 7 and was listed as temporarily out of stock on Friday. On Sunday, it had slipped to 14th place and was still listed as out of stock. “We are filling the pipeline as fast as we can,” a Simon & Schuster spokesman said.
A wake for Carr is scheduled for Monday, while his funeral will be held Tuesday morning.
