Lady Lucy Duff-Gordon and her husband, Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon, became public villains after the Titanic sank in 1912 because they fled the ship on a lifeboat that could have held 28 more people. Many people on the Titanic at the time, of course, really could have put one of those empty spots to good use. Well, a letter that Mrs. Duff-Gordon wrote after the tragedy was just sold for $11,875 in Boston, and it indicates that she was not only heartless but also a big baby.
“How kind of you to send me a cable of sympathy from New York on our safety,” the fashion designer wrote to a stateside friend.
“According to the way we’ve been treated by England on our return we didn’t seem to have done the right thing in being saved at all!!!! Isn’t it disgraceful.”
Hahahaha. Haha. Hahahahahahahahaha. Isn’t it disgraceful. Quite, quite. There should be more rappers named Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon.
