Ohio State Football Player Complained of Concussion Problems Before Apparent Suicide

The body of Ohio State student, wrestler, and football player Kosta Karageorge—who went missing last Wednesday—was found on Sunday after Karageorge apparently took his own life. From the Columbus Dispatch:

Yesterday afternoon, a woman and her son were sifting through a dumpster near 6th and Courtland avenues when they found his body. The dumpster is around the corner from Karageorge’s apartment on E. 7th Avenue, close to the Short North Kroger.

The 22-year-old appeared to have killed himself, police said. A handgun was found near his body inside the dumpster.

A text that Karageorge sent to his mother alluded to distress caused by concussions:

The text he had sent on Wednesday said he was sorry, “if I am an embarrassment, but these concussions have my head all f—– up.”

Ohio State’s wrestling coach says that Karageorge, who joined the football team this year as a walk-on after three years as an OSU wrestler, did not suffer any documented concussions during his time on the wrestling team. Family members have said he was concussed a month ago (during football season) and had also been concussed during athletic activity on other occasions. His sister says that Karageorge was “properly taken care of by OSU” and that trainers had reacted appropriately to his concussion-related concerns.

Karageorge was 22.
