Fox News was first in to call the Colorado Senate race for Republican Rep. Cory Gardner in his closely contested race against Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Udall. The Udall campaign immediately contested the call as premature, but with CNN also projecting Gardner as the winner, Udall is all but certain to lose his seat. A Udall loss in Colorado—a state that has trended Democrats’ way in recent elections and President Obama carried by 5 points in 2012—brings the GOP one step closer to a potential Senate takeover. Throughout the campaign Gardner repeatedly tried to tie Udall’s voting record to Obama, while Udall tried to brand Gardner as an extremist on women’s issues.
