Police from the Los Angeles area are looking for a driver who crashed into three teenage girls while they were out trick-or-treating in Halloween costumes and fled the scene. The three girls were walking in a crosswalk in Santa Ana in front of an elementary school when they were hit by a driver “going at a high rate of speed,” reports the Los Angeles Times. Two girls died immediately while the third survived a bit longer but died at the scene while paramedics were getting ready to take her to the hospital.

Santa Ana’s police chief says they have managed to locate the car—a Honda CR-V—that is thought to have been the one that hit the girls. The car was found parked in a shopping mall and it had damage that was consistent with a crash. But the male driver and his male passenger managed to escape.

Although devastating, the three girls’ deaths were hardly the only trick-or-treating–related tragedies on Friday night. In New York state, a 3-year-old boy was killed and a 16-year-old girl seriously injured when they were hit by a car. And in Washington state, a car apparently jumped the curb and hit two 7-year-old girls and a 20-year-old woman, all of whom suffered life-threatening injuries, reports the Associated Press.
