T.J. Lane, convicted of murder for killing three high school classmates in 2012, briefly escaped from an Ohio prison Thursday night. Lane “escaped with two other inmates from the Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution in Lima, Ohio,” the New York Times reports, and he was captured sometime around 1:30 a.m. Friday. The other escapees are also back in custody. Lane apparently escaped by scaling a fence during recreation time and was eventually found about 100 yards away from the fence.
Lima is about 200 miles from Chardon, where Lane opened fire in 2012 in his high school cafeteria. Classes have been canceled today in Chardon, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports.
Allen Oakwood is a minimum- to medium-security facility. Its warden “said he was uncertain why someone serving three consecutive life sentences was not assigned to a maximum-security prison.”
