Texas Tech Football Team Encourages Fans to Wear Black on “Celebrate Cotton” Day

Texas Tech’s football team holds an annual “Celebrate Cotton”–themed game to promote the cotton industry of the state’s High Plains area. This year’s game is on Saturday against Arkansas. Nothing wrong with any of that. But Texas Tech has chosen the worst possible way to promote the game:

This actually marks the second time in a week that an institution that has committed a massive gaffe related to the integral role of black slavery in the history of the American cotton industry.

(SB Nation points out that that fans at last year’s “Celebrate Cotton” contest were encouraged to wear all white, which is the second-worst way to honor the cotton business.)
