More than 60 women and girls out of 68 kidnapped by the Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram last month have escaped and returned to their village, according to security sources and local vigilantes cited by the BBC. The women were abducted from Kummabza village in Borno state in northeastern Nigeria—the terrorist group’s stronghold—on June 18 following a four-day assault on the village by the Islamists. Locals told journalists the women escaped captivity on Friday after the insurgents left to attack a military base.
At least five women involved in the June 18 incident, including a nursing mother, are still missing, as are more than 200 schoolgirls abducted in April.
