Malaysia Airlines’ insurer has started making $50,000 payments to families of passengers on the missing MH370 flight.
As of now, six Malaysian families and one Chinese family have been compensated. Under International Civil Aviation Organization rules, relatives of all 239 missing passengers are entitled to as much as $175,000 each.
Flight MH370 vanished three months ago while bound for Beijing from Kuala Lumpur. Earlier this month, some relatives of the missing passengers came together to initiate a $5 million reward fund in order to encourage anyone with information on the plane’s disappearance to come forward.
According to Malaysian deputy foreign minister Hamzah Zainudin, full payments will be made only when the plane is officially declared lost.
