Serena Williams lost 6-2, 6-2 in the second round of the French Open today to unseeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain; it’s the fewest games Williams has ever won in a Grand Slam match. From USA Today’s FTW site:
For as dominant as Serena has been after turning 30, surprise losses at Slams are nothing new. In the 12 majors she’s played since returning from a 2010 injury, Serena is more likely to not advance past the fourth round (six times) as she is to make the final (five times).
Maria Sharapova, who hasn’t beaten Serena since 2004, is likely now the favorite in the French women’s draw.
Williams’ most recent major win came at the U.S. Open last fall. (She also won last year’s French Open.) She’s currently 32 years and eight months old. The oldest woman to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open era is Martina Navratilova, who triumphed at Wimbledon in 1990 aged 33 years and eight months.
