At least 282 people died in a disaster at a coal mine in western Turkey earlier this week, and protestors angry about what Reuters describes as “the government’s coziness with mining tycoons, its failure to ensure safety and a lack of information on the rescue effort” have taken to the streets. The remarkable pictures above and below show Yusuf Yerkel, an advisor to prime minister Tayyip Erdogan, kicking a protestor during Erdogan’s trip to Soma yesterday.

There’s no word yet as to whether Yerkel will be punished for the attack, which video taken at the scene shows occurring in front of a large crowd.
