Update, 9:58 p.m. Lockdown Lifted, via AP: “All-clear sirens sound at Fort Hood as lockdown lifted hours after shooting at Texas Army post,” according to the AP.
Update, 9:48 p.m. via Associated Press: Wednesday’s shooting has left four dead so far, including the shooter, and 14 others were hurt, law enforcement officials told the Associated Press.
Update, 9:20 p.m. Local Hospital Treats Injured, via the New York Times: “Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Tex., said it received four patients and expected more. The victims’ conditions ranged from stable to ‘quite critical,’ and the injuries included gunshot wounds to the abdomen, chest and neck.”
Update, 8:45 p.m. Suspected Shooter ID’d: The Fort Hood shooter is a soldier, who took his own life, reportedly along with at least three others on Wednesday, law enforcement officials told CBS News. Multiple media outlets have ID’d the suspected shooter as 34-year-old Ivan Lopez. The Washington Post reports that Michael McCaul (R-Tex.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, told reporters Lopez was wearing an Army uniform at the time of the shooting.
Update, 8:25 p.m., via Washington Post: President Obama’s statement on Fort Hood shooting:
“I just got off the phone with the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to get the latest on the shooting at Fort Hood. Obviously, we’re all following it closely. The situation is fluid right now, but my national security team in close contact not just with Defense Department but with the FBI. They are working with folks on ground to determine exactly what happened and ensure that everyone is secure. I want to assure all of us we going to get to bottom of what happened. Any shooting is troubling. Obviously this reopened the pain of what happened at Fort Hood five years ago. We know these familes, we know the service to their country and the sacrifices that they make. Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with the entire community and we are going to do everything we can to make the community of Fort Hood has what it needs to deal with a tough situation but also any potential aftermath. We’re heartbroken that something like this might have happened again. I don’t want to comment on the facts until we know exactly what happened. But just for now I would hope that everyone across the country keep the families of Fort Hood in our thoughts and our prayers. The folks there have sacrificed so much on behalf of our freedom. Many of the people there have been on multiple tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, they served with valor, they served with distinction. At their home base they need to feel safe. We don’t yet know what happened tonight but obviously that sense of safety has been broken once again. We need to find out exactly what happened.”
Update, 8:00 p.m., via Fort Hood Press Center: “Fort Hood’s Directorate of Emergency Services has an initial report that a shooter is dead but this is unconfirmed. The injured personnel are being transported to Carl R. Darnall Medical Center and other local hospitals. Numerous law enforcement agencies are in support and on the scene. The number of injured are not confirmed at this time. No further details are known at this time. The post is currently still on lock down.”
Original Post: A shooting at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas on Wednesday has the base on lockdown. Details are still emerging, but local TV station KWTX is reporting at least one person is dead from the shooting and 14 more are injured. CNN reports that a suspected shooter is dead, but that authorities are still considering the site an active shooter situation. Fort Hood army base was the site of a 2009 shooting when Maj. Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, killed 13 people.
