Bob Costas (and His Red Eyes) Will Get the Night Off in Sochi

Looks like that vodka shot with Mary Carillo didn't help:

"My eyes can’t get any redder, no matter what I do," Costas joked last night before he threw back his drink. It's unclear if that's actually true—Costas called in to the Today show this morning to make the announcement so for all we know his eye sockets are actually on fire right now—but it's fairly obvious they're not getting better.

As anyone who's tuned into any of NBC's tape-delayed primetime coverage has no doubt noticed, Costas has been battlling an eye infection throughout the games. (Those of us who've tuned in every night have watched with varying degrees of horror as the infection has seemingly spread from his left eye to his right one.)

Tonight's Costas-less coverage will mark the first time since 1988 that someone other than Bob has hosted NBC's Olympic primetime coverage, according to the network.
