The White House this afternoon confirmed what John Kerry hinted at earlier today: President Obama plans to meet with Pope Francis sometime soon. "The president looks forward to meeting with the pope in the near future," White House press secretary Jay Carney said Tuesday, declining to elaborate on exactly when or where the two men might meet.
Kerry visited the Vatican earlier today, meeting with the pope's chief diplomat but not Francis himself. After the meeting, the secretary of state broke the news of a potential meeting between pope and POTUS. "I know that the Holy Father is anticipating the visit of President Obama here, and the president is looking forward to coming here to meet with him," Kerry said.
Obama has had kind words for Francis in recent months, perhaps most notably quoting the pope's remarks during a speech on income inequality last month.
