Clinton: Obama Should "Honor" Promise to Let People Keep Their Health Plans

In an interview published Tuesday, Bill Clinton says that he believes that President Obama should do whatever it takes—including tweaking the healthcare law itself—to ensure that Americans can keep their existing insurance plans if they want to. "I personally believe, even if it takes a change in the law, that the president should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they've got," the former president said in an interview with

News of policy cancellations has put the White House on the defensive over Obama's if-you-like-your-health-plan-you-can-keep-it promise that proved more than a little misleading for some Americans. Last week, the president offered an apology for those who saw their policies canceled, and said he would consider changes to address the issue. "I’ve assigned my team to see what we can do to close some of the holes and gaps in the law, because, you know, my intention is to lift up and make sure the insurance that people buy is effective — that it’s actually going to deliver what they think they’re purchasing," Obama said.

You can watch Clinton's full OZY interview above. Despite the "honor the commitment" line that is getting the most play, the former president uses most of the interview to tout Obamacare as a whole. "The big lesson is that we’re better off with this law than without it," he says.
