Admitted Crack-User Rob Ford Isn’t Resigning as Mayor. He’s Running for Re-election.

As we (and the rest of the Internet) reported earlier today, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford finally admitted this afternoon that he has smoked crack cocaine—most likely, he says, in one of his “drunken stupors”—but nonetheless refused to concede that he’d lied to the public about it because the questions he had been cherry-picking from the Canadian press corps for the past six months were always in the present tense. “I wasn’t lying,” he shot back at reporters who pressed him this afternoon at city hall. “You didn’t ask the correct questions. No, I’m not an addict. And, no, I do not do drugs.”

The news, unsurprisingly, caused quite the storm in the Great White North. So will Toronto’s Quimby-like mayor resign now that there’s no longer even a shred of doubt that he smoked crack cocaine while running North America’s fourth-largest city? In a word: No.

In a few more: “For the sake of the taxpayers, we must get back to work immediately. I was elected to do a job and that’s exactly what I’m going to continue doing,” Ford said at a late afternoon press conference that followed his earlier, apparently impromptu admission. He continued: “On Oct. 27, 2014, I want the people of this great city to decide whether they want Rob Ford to be their mayor.”

For those unfamiliar with the Canadian electoral calendar, that’s when the next mayoral election was set to happen anyway, crack-admission or no crack-admission. So, not only is Ford not resigning, he’s running for reelection. Oh, face!
