Until just days ago, Khadija Ghaznawi was running for president of Afghanistan. Then, without warning or explanation, she was disqualified, Time reports.
On Tuesday, Ghaznawi, along with half of those who had signed up to run for the presidency were told by Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission that they did not qualify to run. “The elections commission didn’t tell me why,” Ghaznawi told Time. “I haven’t received one phone call… I’m very angry with the decision.”
“There are different reasons [for the disqualifications]. Some of them had problems with documents, education levels, the number of registration signatures,” elections commission chief, Ahmad Yousuf Nuristan told Al Jazeera.
“I was certain I gave them everything they wanted,” Ghaznawi said to Time. “I will keep trying to find out what the problem what was.”
Elections in the race to succeed President Hamid Karzai are set for April 5th.
