In southern Russia a female suicide bomber blew herself up on a crowded city bus on Monday. The blast, which occurred while the bus was driving on a six-lane highway, has so far killed six people and injured 30 more, according to Russian officials. Authorities believe 50 people were on the bus at the time of the blast, according to RIA Novosti, a Russian news agency.

The attack took place in the city of Volgograd (formerly known as Stalingrad) and added to security fears ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi early next year, the Associated Press reports. A witness told local police the woman boarded the bus wearing a traditional Islamic headscarf and detonated the bomb almost immediately, the Christian Science Monitor reports. Reuters cites a local law enforcement source in Dagestan reporting that the suspected bomber had been the wife of Dmitry Sokolov, a man from outside of Moscow who joined an insurgent group in Dagestan last year.

Russian state news showed video of the explosion captured by a camera in a car that was trailing the bus.
