A gunman opened fire on a federal court building in Wheeling, West Virginia on Wednesday before being shot dead by police. The only injury during the shooting spree was to a security officer, who was hit by flying debris, according to Chief Deputy Mike Claxton of the Marshals Service in northern West Virginia.
According to The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, the shooter was a former police officer in the area and the motive for the shooting is still unknown. The shooting started around 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon when the gunman positioned himself in a parking lot across the street from the building and opened fire, shooting up to two dozen rounds. The man was armed with an assault-type rifle, according to the Marshals Service.
