After months of speculation it seems there’s a launch date for the new iPhone. Apple fans, mark your calendars for Sept. 10, when, according to All Things D, the company will hold a “special event” to unveil the next version of the iPhone. Although Apple has obviously refused to comment, ABC News points out that the date “would fall into Apple’s usual iPhone launch schedule,” noting the company unveiled the iPhone 5 on Sept. 12, 2012. The new phone, which people are guessing will be called the 5S, will likely have a fingerprint sensor.
More than any specific feature though, the greatest speculation has centered around whether the company will finally give in to demands that it produce a cheaper version of the iPhone to capture the market share it has lost to Android devices, particularly those made by Samsung. Although Apple has tried to appeal to that market by selling its older iPhones at a discount, there’s increased talk the company will unveil an entirely different model, rumored to be called the 5C, designed for the mid-range smartphone market.
SlashGear has posted photos taken from a Vietnamese site that allegedly depict dummy models of the 5S and 5C. The 5S “appears nearly identical to the iPhone 5 save several small distinctions,” notes SlashGear.
