Tyson Gay, the American who holds the 100-meter record, acknowledged he tested positive for a banned substance and will pull out of next month’s world championships in Moscow, according to the Associated Press. Gay wouldn’t say what the banned substance was but he didn’t dispute the findings, saying he was notified last week that a sample taken on May 16 tested positive.
“I don’t have a sabotage story. I don’t have any lies. I don’t have anything to say to make this seem like it was a mistake or it was on USADA’s hands, someone playing games,” Gay said, reportedly fighting back sobs. “I don’t have any of those stories. I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down.” He refused to specify who that someone might be.
The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency insisted Gay’s “B” sample still has to be tested and noted that “as in all cases all athletes are innocent unless or until proven otherwise through the established legal process.”
Meanwhile, the Jamaican newspaper the Gleaner reported that five local athletes, including two sprinters who are Olympic gold medalists, have tested positive for banned substances. The newspaper does not reveal any names but Usain Bolt’s agent told BBC Radio 5 that the most famoust Jamaican sprinter is not one of those who tested positive, journalist Sonja McLaughlan wrote on Twitter. The Gleaner hears word the banned substance may have been part of a dietary supplement.
