Employees of the Farirmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver found 31-year-old Cory Monteith dead in his 21st floor room Saturday afternoon. The actor, who had publicly talked about his battle with substance abuse, became a global sensation for his role of student-turned-teacher Finn Hudson on the hit Fox show Glee. Vancouver police said Saturday night that there didn’t appear to be foul play but that “the cause of death wasn’t immediately apparent,” reports the Los Angeles Times. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Monteith, who grew up in Victoria, British Columbia, announced earlier this year that he had voluntarily checked himself into a treatment center for an unspecified substance addiction, notes the New York Times. At the time, his girlfriend and Glee co-star Lea Michele released a public statement expressing her “love and support” for Monteith. It wasn’t his first stint in rehab. In 2011, he had told Parade that he went to rehab when he was 19, saying he was using “anything and everything, as much as possible.” But the rehab didn’t really stick: “I did the stint but then went back to doing exactly what I left off doing.”

Monteith shot two independent movies last year that still have not been released: All the Wrong Reasons and McCanick, reports Variety.
