Mark Sanford: Is This Fox News or the National Enquirer?

Things got a little uncomfortable for former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford when he went on Fox News to talk about his victory over Elizabeth Colbert Busch to fill an open House seat. “You are now engaged to the woman with whom you had the affair, Maria Belen Chapur,” Fox News’ Chris Wallace said. “She made a brief appearance … at your victory party which raised some eyebrows. Question: What did your boys think of that? And, your four boys, and have they accepted her?” Sanford avoided the question: “I’m not going to go into inner family conversations, but I would just say it is what it is.”

Wallace, however, kept on pressing about what is likely the one thing that makes Sanford remotely interesting to a national audience: “Do you have a date for your wedding and will your fiancée—will she come to Washington to live with you? I feel like I’m the National Enquirer here.” Sanford took that as his cue: “Exactly. Is this Fox News or National Enquirer? So, I’m not going to make news on that front tonight—or this morning.”
