Korean pop star Psy unveiled the dance and video for his new song, Gentleman, in front of 50,000 fans at Seoul’s World Cup Stadium Saturday. More than 160,000 people also tuned in online to see if his new song could repeat the sensation of Gangnam Style, the most watched video in YouTube’s history with 1.5 billion hits, points out Reuters.
At a news conference before the concert, Psy directly addressed the tensions in the Korean peninsula, saying he hopes North Koreans would enjoy his new single. Psy had previously been reluctant to speak about North Korea, but said Saturday he wanted North Koreans to enjoy his music’s “fun and happiness.” He added that if the audience at his concern sang loud enough, people in the North might just be able to hear, reports USA Today. On a more serious note, Psy also called tensions with North Korea a “tragedy,” adding, “We are the only countries divided right now.”
Psy recognized that the huge hit of Gangnam Style meant expectations were high for his new single. “Of course I feel more burden than before, because lots of people are watching.” But he dismissed speculation he would become a one-hit wonder, reports the Associated Press. “Whether or not a couple of my songs become a global hit, I’ve been doing this job for 12 years,” Psy said. “I will bring more Korean dance moves and Korean songs overseas.”
