Burger King Gains 30 Percent More Twitter Followers After Account is Hacked

Hackers took over Burger King’s Twitter account Monday, changed its profile picture to a McDonald’s logo and for more than 60 minutes sent out messages, some of them obscene. “We just got sold to McDonalds!” read the first tweet sent out shortly after 12 p.m. Many of the tweets had the hashtag #DFNCTSC, suggesting the hackers were part of the Defonic Team Screen Name Club, best known for hacking into Paris Hilton’s phone, reports Slashgear.

While most of the tweets were pretty innocuous, some were not as easy to laugh about, including several that referenced employees taking drugs. One tweet even had an image of someone injecting a syringe into his arm: “We caught one of our employees in the bathroom doing this,” read to the tweet. Another one said that “all our employees crush and sniff percocets in the bathrooms.” Read the tweets here.

 “Basically this is a brand’s worst nightmare—and yet more evidence that marketing is a 24/7 job,” even on a holiday, writes Saya Weissman on Digiday. At the same time, the number of followers in the account jumped from 83,000 to 110,000 within 60 minutes, according to Unmetric data cited by Slashgear, so it wasn’t a total loss.
