New York appears poised to become the first state to enact new gun-control laws in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting that left 20 children and six staff members dead last month. The Associated Press with the details:
The tentative agreement would further restrict New York’s ban on assault weapons and limit the size of magazines to seven bullets, rather than the current 10. Other elements, pushed by Republicans, would refine a mental health law that allows for civil confinement of people determined to be a threat to others.
The deal has reportedly so far been hashed out only by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and legislative leaders and still must be presented to rank-and-file lawmakers. That’s expected to happen behind closed doors today. If all goes as planned, the deal could be formally unveiled later this week.
