President Barack Obama has won a second term in office, Slate projects.
Based on our omnibus electoral scoreboard that includes projections from all of the major news networks, the president has won a total of at least 303 electoral votes, earning himself another four years in office.
With Florida remaining as the only state still too close to call, Mitt Romney had garnered a total of 201 electoral votes, only 15 of which came from a state (North Carolina) widely considered to be a toss-up entering the night. The president, meanwhile, managed to claim the battleground states of Ohio, Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Colorado, Nevada and Iowa.
With a win in the Sunshine State, Obama’s final tally would climb to 332. Romney, meanwhile, has earned 206 electoral votes, a total that would jump to 235 if he is able to win the sole swing-state prize still up for grabs.
When the final votes are tallied, however, the president appears unlikely to have the same commanding lead—if he has one at all—in the popular vote. At last count, Obama and Romney were knotted at 49 percent apiece, although the president was beginning to pull ahead as West Coast votes were being tallied.
